A brief note on attending hockey games during the NHL Lockout…

Toronto, ON There appears to be no immediate end in sight for the current (and senseless) NHL Lockout, and with all this prolonged gloom and doom, hockey fans are itching more and more for their hockey fix. For the newbie hockey fans, who weren’t around during the last lockout, finding alternative sources of hockey can be a bit overwhelming. And while attending as many alternative hockey games as possible is pretty much the only way to survive a lockout with sanity intact, please make sure that the games you choose to attend do not actually contribute to the prolonging of this lockout.I’m not sure if many of you are just hockey starved to the point of insanity, or if your jock sniffing knows no bounds, but I shouldn’t have to actually tell you how attending any NHLPA (or NHL) event is a totally bad idea at a time like this. And, yes, this goes for all upcoming PA organized “charity” hockey games as well. Staying neutral is absolutely critical this season, as both the owners and the players continue to fuck around in negotiations, and yet manage to waste plenty of time trying to persuade us to take “sides.” Taking a side gives them power. It gives them the power to keep twiddling their thumbs (and other body parts) while they enjoy a nice extended offseason in the sun, and we continue to suffer.

It has to be said that neither side comes off as saint-like in this battle. And, of course, neither side sincerely cares about the wellbeing of the fans, and so showing solidarity with the League or with the PA is just a waste of our time and dignity. Let’s recap. The players want to continue to earn more revenue than the owners. OK… But in what universe do the employees make more than the employers? 50/50 was more than a fair deal, if you ask me, and if the players had just taken it, we would have had our season opener in just a few hours! Of course, there is a flip side. While the League has been getting ripped off in the HRR department for a very long time, we also have to remember that the way things are now (or were in the now expired CBA) are the way they wanted them 7 years ago. This is their system that they are suddenly unsatisfied with, a system that already cost us one hockey season. Yeah…

OK, so an NHLPA “game for charity” sounds nice and innocent enough, and let’s not forget that it’s for a good cause, and all. However, by attending these games you are showing your solidarity with the PA, which would probably give them more confidence in continuing to block all of Bettman/the owners’ advances, and would therefore ensure that more portions of the 2012-13 season are cancelled. (I’ve got a feeling it will be the PA that ends up caving in this lockout, I mean, we’ve all seen how far the League will go to get what they want, right?) Anyway, the money you would spend on a ticket to a charity game is better off being donated directly to the charity of your choice, where 80 cents on every dollar (90 cents in an emergency) will actually go to the cause, and not a smaller percentage after offsetting the cost of the game. And if you are still looking for your hockey fix, then start sniffing out your nearest junior, minor, or college team, and get your asses in those seats already! I am personally headed to my first QMJHL game in Gatineau on Sunday!

Toronto is supposed to get snow tomorrow night. I don’t know about you, but hockey is the only thing that really knows how to keep me warm on those long, cold winter nights, and I REALLY don’t need another year of freezing to death, quite frankly. ;) Our time is running out…

Amendment: Please note that NHL/PA organized ALUMNI games are fair play. Go nuts.
